CLEAR研修坊: 二语领域人格特质研究

20241226日上午,我校国际商务外语学院外国语言学及应用语言学专业2022级研究生省可可,应语言教育与测评中心(CLEAR)邀请,为我院师生带来了一场主题为二语领域人格特质研究的学术讲座,我校国际商务外语学院的近二十名师生在博萃楼104参加了此次活动。

On the morning of December 26, at the invitation of the Center for Language Education and Assessment Research (CLEAR), Xing Keke, a graduate student majoring in Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics from the School of Languages of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE), delivered an academic lecture entitled A Brief Review of Personality Traits in L2 Context. Nearly 20 teachers and students from the School of Languages attended this lecture in Bocui Building 104.

讲座伊始,报告人以近年来广受关注的MBTI性格特质为引子,巧妙地将人格特质这一研究主题引入讨论,并与在场同学进行互动,提出了三个引人深思的问题:外向的人是否会比内向的人在二语表现上更为出色?MBTI问卷在测量二语学习者人格特质时是否有效?在二语领域内是否还有其他可靠的人格测量工具?这些问题不仅激发了同学们的思考,也为后续的讲座内容奠定了基础。

At the beginning of the lecture, the speaker used MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), a hot topic in recent years, to introduce the research topic of personality traits and interacted with the students by asking three thought-provoking questions: Do extroverted people perform better in L2 language learning than those introverted people? Is MBTI valid in language learning contexts? What other instruments can be used in L2 language contexts? These questions stimulated the students’ thinking and laid the foundation for the subsequent lecture.

接着,报告人深入浅出地阐释了人格研究的重要性。她指出,人格特质影响着个体的生理和心理健康、生活满意度、行为以及学业成就,而且与其他教育相关学科相比,在二语学习领域,人格特质的作用研究相对较少。这是由于在复杂的二语学习环境中,学者更加青睐其他易受干预的变量,而非较为稳定的性格特质。然而,作为重要的个体差异因素之一,人格特质被认为可以促进二语学习,因此报告人强调,我们不应回避对人格特质的研究。

Next, the speaker explained the significance of personality research. She points out that personality traits can affect an individual’s physical and mental health, life satisfaction, behavior, and academic achievement. Besides, in second language (L2) learning, there is relatively little research on the role of personality traits compared to other education-related academic disciplines. This is because, in the complex L2 learning environment, scholars prefer variables that are susceptible to intervention rather than stable personality traits. However, as one of the important individual differences, personality traits are considered to help promote L2 learning. The speaker stressed that more studies of personality traits are needed.

在报告的第二部分,报告人详细介绍了人格的两大理论和各理论的经典模型,例如EPQ模型、五因素模型(FFM)和大五人格(Big Five)等,阐释这些模型的具体内容和发展历程,为听众呈现了一个全面的理论框架。

In the second part, the speaker introduced the two theories of personality and the classical models of each theory in detail, including the EPQ model, the five-factor model (FFM), and the Big Five personality (BFP). She explained the content and development of these models, presenting a comprehensive theoretical framework for the audience.

在报告的第三部分,报告人着眼于人格领域的测量工具,介绍了大五人格理论下的主流的测量工具,包括NEONEO PINEO-FFIBFIBFI-2等,并对这些工具的适用性和局限性进行了分析。

In the third part, the speaker focused on the measurement tools in the field of personality, introduced some mainstream measurement tools under the Big-Five framework, including NEO, NEO PI, neo-FFI, BFI, BFI-2, etc., and analyzed the applicability and limitations of these tools.

在报告的第四部分,报告人探讨了人格特质在二语研究领域中的问题和进展。她指出,尽管某些特质如开放性和尽责性对二语学习有积极影响,而神经质则可能产生负面影响,总体来看,研究表明人格特质与二语学习成就之间的关系复杂且不一致。此外,她还讨论了可能的中介变量和调节变量,如高阶思维、情绪、动机等,以及学校水平、文化、社会经济地位等因素对二语学习成就的影响。

In the fourth part, the speaker discussed the problems and progress of personality traits research in the field of L2 learning. She pointed out that certain traits such as openness and conscientiousness tend to have a positive impact on L2 learning, while neuroticism may have a negative effect. Generally speaking, research findings show that the relationship between personality traits and L2 achievement is complex and mixed. In addition, she discussed the possible mediators and moderators, such as higher-order thinking, emotion, and motivation as well as the possible influence of school level, culture, socioeconomic status (SES), and other factors on L2 learning achievement.

最后,报告人强调,人格特质作为个体差异的一部分,虽然被视为相对稳定的特质,但基于此衍生的相关技能如任务表现、情绪调节、合作等是可以培养和锻炼的。她鼓励关注这些技能的培养,以促进个人的全面发展。

Finally, the speaker emphasized that although personality traits are regarded as relatively stable factors, the relevant skills derived from them, such as task performance, emotional regulation, cooperation, can be cultivated and practiced. She called for more attention to the cultivation of these skills in order to promote the all-round development of individuals.

该讲座内容丰富、条理清晰,不仅为师生们提供了二语领域人格特质研究的最新进展,也为未来的研究方向提供了启示。讲座在热烈的掌声中圆满结束,与会师生纷纷表示受益匪浅。

The lecture is rich in content and clearly organized. It not only provides teachers and students with the latest progress in the studies of personality traits in the field of L2, but also provides implications for future research directions. The lecture ended with warm applause and should benefit all attendees.
